The Panthers have a definite need for a pass rush in 2019. With all but Mario Addison and Marquis Haynes set to become free agents in March the Panthers have a serious lack of bodies at the defensive end position. There are two ways they could approach this problem: The NFL Draft and free agency. Arguments can be made for both solutions Will Grier Jersey , but for the fun of it let’s take a look at the top ten defensive end prospects the Panthers should consider drafting in the upcoming draft. To make it easier, I’ve grouped them in tiers of where the prospects are projected to fall in the draft order.The ‘guys we have no chance in hell of drafting but you’ll get mad and complain in the comments if I don’t mention them’ tierThis one’s pretty simple. These guys are all going in the top 10 of the draft (and some are going top five), but for gits and shiggles let’s talk about them anyway.Nick Bosa, Ohio State: Yeah, he’s probably going No. 1 overall to the Cardinals. There’s no realistic way the Panthers can draft Bosa because it would cost too much in draft capital to move from No. 16 all the way up to No. 1 overall. Getting Bosa would be great, but then you take away future draft picks that can be used to fill holes in other places on the roster. Unless Bosa gets caught on video kicking puppies or calling a hot dog a sandwich, or unless Marty Hurney absentmindedly sells the entire farm to move up, he’s not getting drafted by Carolina.Clelin Ferrell, Clemson: As much as it pains me to admit https://www.carolinapanthersfanshop.com/Greg-Little-Jersey , Ferrell is really dang good y’all. He’s probably going to be the second defensive end taken after Bosa. I don’t see him falling past No. 5 overall. Hopefully the 49ers take him at No. 2 or the Jets take him at No. 3 so the Buccaneers don’t have the opportunity to draft him, because I don’t know about y’all but I’m not looking forward to him being on a non-Panthers NFC South team for the next decade.Josh Allen, Kentucky: This Josh Allen Experience will be good for whoever gets him. He probably projects more as a 3-4 OLB, so he likely wouldn’t be on the Panthers’ radar anyway, but it won’t matter. He’s going in the top five of the draft, and the top 10 at worst. I don’t see any scenario where he falls to No. 16 overall, unless people realize he’s from Kentucky or something... but in the NFL Draft no one seems to care about that anyway.The ‘guys who might fall but probably won’t so don’t get your hopes up too much’ tierThese are the guys who might fall into the teens depending on how desperate for quarterbacks some teams get, but you really shouldn’t expect any of them to still be on the board when it’s time for the Panthers to pick. Yeah, Derwin James fell to No. 17 last year Brian Burns Jersey , but that doesn’t happen very often so don’t bet your paycheck on it happening again in 2019.Rashan Gary, Michigan: He’s either a strongside defensive end or a defensive tackle depending on who you ask, but it probably doesn’t matter anyway. He’ll likely go in the top 15 picks and I’m not sure he’s worth trading up to get. He’s probably going to be a good player for whoever drafts him, but I don’t think it will be Carolina. Dan Kadar has him being Kyle Williams’ replacement in Buffalo at No. 9 overall, so that’s definitely a possibility.Jachai Polite, Florida: He’s probably going in the top 12 picks. He would be a great fit for the Panthers if there’s a run on offensive linemen or quarterbacks in the top ten picks, but picking at No. 16 means that the Panthers would have to do a lot of hoping and praying that Polite falls that far. Crazier things have happened, but I wouldn’t expect to see him in black and blue next year.The Goldilocks tierThese are the guys who are a) good players, b) should be available at No. 16 overall Graham Gano Jersey , and c) are not a tremendous reach to draft at that spot. They’re not too hot and they’re not too cold; they’re just right. (You’ve read Goldilocks and the Three Bears, haven’t you?)Montez Sweat, Mississippi State: Dan Kadar has Sweat going to the Colts at No. 22 overall so there’s a chance he’s on the board at No. 16. Picking a guy six spots ahead of where one draft analyst predicts he’ll go isn’t much of a reach at all, so Sweat is definitely a guy that should be on the Panthers’ radar for their first pick. Zach Allen, Boston College: He’s projected to go No. 27 overall to the Patriots by Kadar, so it’s a little bit more of a reach than someone like Sweat, but when you’re desperate for help at a premium position you don’t have many options. I’d rather see the Panthers overdraft a defensive end by 10-ish spots than to see them overdraft an offensive tackle by multiple rounds. Allen wouldn’t be my favorite pick the Panthers could make, but if they leave the first round with a pass rusher I won’t be terribly upset about it.The ‘only take these guys if you can trade down and get extra picks to go with them’ tierThese guys are pass rushers who will be available at the bottom of the first round and could potentially last into the middle of the second round. There is a contingent of fans who want the Panthers to trade down from the No. 16 overall pick to collect more picks to use on players, and if Hurney does that he can draft one of the guys in this tier. But Julius Peppers Jersey , if he uses the No. 16 pick on one of them, his job security should be in question.Chase Winovich, Michigan: He’s probably more of a 3-4 OLB than a 4-3 DE so he might not be a good fit for the Panthers. But, if he’s still on the board in the second round after the Panthers traded out of the No. 16 pick and added an extra pick or two, it wouldn’t be the worst call to take Winovich. He had 14.5 tackles for loss in 2018 so he knows how to get in the backfield and disrupt plays, and the Panthers need that almost as much as they need players who can sack the quarterback. Jaylon Ferguson, Louisiana Tech: Ferguson had 23.5 tackles for loss and 15 sacks last season. Those are nice numbers for a prospect who could be taken at the bottom of the first round or in the second round. I wouldn’t like this pick at No. 16, but at No 40? I wouldn’t complain very much about it.Oshane Ximines, Old Dominion: Okay DJ Moore Color Rush Jersey , real talk: One of the reasons I went with Ximines is because of his name, but he’s no slouch. He had 58 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, four forced fumbles, two passes batted and one interception last season for Old Dominion. He didn’t play against the cr猫me de la cr猫me of college football, but he can make plays. I think he would be a good choice in the second or third round if the Panthers are able to trade down and collect picks with their first rounder. What do you think, Panthers fans? There didn’t appear to be many free agents on the market that could step in right away, except for one. In a surprising move for the Panthers, they signed free agent defensive tackle Dontari Poe to a three year deal. The move turned nervous apprehension into cautious optimism. A year later I think we can say it was a good move, at least from the comparison of the two players and the contracts they were given. In both cases the Panthers came out on top after year one. According to Pro Football Focus, Poe outplayed Lotulelei in 2018. Before I go any further I will say neither player lit it up. Poe finished the season the No. 66 ranked defensive tackle in the league. That’s not very impressive when their are only 32 teams. Lotulelei was even lower in the rankings, coming in at exactly No. 100. Now before you rail on the low rankings remember there is a difference in the two tackle positions and much depends on the scheme as well. Poe is No. 54 against the run only, which is really what his main job is, stop the run. When you look at the contracts between the two players there is a clear winner there too. The Buffalo Bills signed Lotulelei to a five year deal that averages $10 million a season.Before you declare Lotulelei a declining player you should know many Bills fans see his job as being very thankless:While that is not a glowing endorsement, I’m sure some Bills fans see it more rosy. By comparison the Panthers only committed three seasons to Poe at an average of $9.3 million per season.
